The airship mast celebrates 100 years

In 2026, it is 100 years since the airship mast in Vadsø was completed. As a distinctive landmark and important cultural monument, the mast tells the story of Vadsø's role in international polar and aviation history in the 1920s.

The airship mast was erected in connection with the great airship voyages to the North Pole, and is particularly associated with the expeditions of Roald Amundsen and Umberto Nobile. Today, the airship mast is part of the Vadsøya Cultural Park, which is Vadsø's Fotefar. The cultural park contains several important traces of the city's history and gives visitors the opportunity to experience stories about polar exploration, war history and everyday life - all gathered in a unique cultural environment. The 100th anniversary in 2026 provides a good opportunity to highlight the airship mast and the Vadsøya Cultural Park as important mediators of local, national and international history.
