Kåfjord copper mines celebrate 200 years in 2026

In 2026, it will be 200 years since the start of mining operations in Kåfjord, one of Northern Norway's most important industrial historical sites. The anniversary will mark the importance Kåfjord copper mines have had for the development of the region, both as a workplace, a technological pioneer and a cultural and historical meeting point.

Throughout the anniversary year, various events and outreach activities are planned that will highlight the history of mining, the people who worked there and the impact the business has had on the local community. The goal is to make history accessible to both locals and visitors. Kåfjord Copper Mines is today an important cultural monument and a popular tourist destination, and the 200th anniversary provides a unique opportunity to celebrate and disseminate this part of Norwegian industrial history. The Alta Historical Society and Alta Museum are collaborating on this commemoration. At Alta Museum you can see and learn about Kåfjord Copper Mines today as this is part of their permanent exhibition.
